For personal possession in Canada, adults are generally limited to the equivalent of 30 grams of dried cannabis (or its equivalent in other forms) in a public place. That limit applies whether you're walking, driving, or otherwise in public. Provincial and territorial rules add further restrictions, including age limits and packaging rules.
Personal transport limits
The federal Cannabis Act sets a 30g (dried cannabis equivalent) public possession limit for adults. Different cannabis products have different equivalency ratios — for example, a fixed weight of fresh cannabis, edibles, beverages or extracts translates to a specific amount of "dried cannabis equivalent". Provinces may impose additional rules.
For travel between provinces and territories within Canada, the federal limit still applies to public possession, and provincial rules at both ends are relevant. Crossing an international border with cannabis remains illegal — even between Canada and a U.S. state where cannabis is legal.
Commercial cannabis transportation
Commercial cannabis transportation is governed by a separate regime. Licensed cannabis transportation companies move product between licensed sites in volumes far above the personal limit — but only under licensing, security, and chain-of-custody requirements set by Health Canada.
- Product moves only between licensed parties.
- Loads are sealed, tracked, and documented at every step.
- Drivers and vehicles meet cannabis-transport security expectations.
- Records support audits and compliance reporting.
