The short answer for personal transport in Canada: cannabis must be stored in a place where neither the driver nor passengers have immediate access while the vehicle is in motion. In practice that usually means a sealed package kept in the trunk, or a locked container inaccessible from the driver/passenger area. Provincial and territorial rules add their own restrictions on top of the federal Cannabis Act, so check the rules where you're driving and where you're delivering.
Personal transport — the general rule
Under Canada's federal framework, cannabis being transported in a personal vehicle should be in its original packaging if possible and stored so it is not readily accessible to the driver or any occupant while the vehicle is operating. The trunk of a sedan, or a sealed/locked container in the cargo area of an SUV or pickup, are common ways to meet the spirit of the rule.
This guidance is informational, not legal advice. For personal transport, confirm current rules with your provincial regulator or local law enforcement before traveling.
Commercial cannabis transportation — how licensed transport works
Commercial cannabis transportation is a different regime. Licensed cannabis transportation companies — including Kelowna Cross Dock — move product between licensed sites under chain-of-custody, with sealed packaging, controlled access, and documented receipt at every handoff. In a commercial cannabis transport setup:
- Cannabis loads are segregated and sealed at origin.
- Drivers cannot access the product in the cargo area while the vehicle is in motion.
- The vehicle and load are tracked from pickup to delivery.
- Receipt is signed and seals verified at the destination licensed site.
If you're a licensed producer or processor
Moving product from a licensed cultivation, processing or storage site to another licensed party requires a logistics partner that understands cannabis-specific requirements. We provide that for licensed producers and processors across BC, with a daily corridor between Vancouver, Kelowna, Calgary and Edmonton.
